Online, a long time ago and it was misquoted to boot... | Have you seen SC mentioned in the news?
As a mother, we are often called upon to think for our children. At such a young age, I would not let him wear his sister's dress. I'm afraid that he may perceive this outfit as the thing to wear when you start school because it was so important to his sister. However, by the age of 10, if he still insisted on wearing his sisters clothes, I would seriously consider consulting to discover his orientation. If it proves that he may be a male stuck in a female's body, then let it be. But kindergarten is too soon to really know his motivation... | Would you let your son wear a dress to his first day of kindergarten?
You answered the same thing I did but with so few words and just as eloquently! | Would you let your son wear a dress to his first day of kindergarten?
The unfortunate truth about this kind of question is that we have to live every day in our societies. I know the society that I live in, and it is not the type to accept anything beyond the "norm". I only care to spare my child from the hurt that such an action could cause him. Quite frankly, at 5 years of age, I don't even let them pick a chocolate bar at a candy store. If you ask a 5 year old what he would like; you could be there all day before he makes a decision - so you don't give him a choice - you pick it for him! At 5 years of age, the best thing for them is to be firmly guided with sensible decisions that the sensible parent makes. As I said, the "sensible" decision, for me, is based on the possible hurt he could receive if he wore a dress at the 1st day of school. His idea of wearing a skirt might come from the fact the skirt his sister wore was "all important" for HER first day, how can I know the difference between that, this "all important" piece of clothing is not based on his sister's idea of the best way to dress for entering kindergarten or that he really digs skirts?? He is 5 years old! It IS possible that he is making a mistake and as a responsible parent, I will help him to prevent it. And, YES! Wearing a dress IS sexist! I don't get it myself... I remember, maybe 15 years ago, skirts made for men with the type of fabrics used for men's suits (you know, pin strips and etc....) They never caught on, so I thought; What a loss to all mankind, they will never feel the comfort of wearing a skirt to go to work! Why did it not catch on? Maybe because this society is not ready for men to be really even with women (or vice versa). Since we live in this society, I will keep my FIVE year old from wearing a dress at his 1st day of kindergarten. Otherwise, I could be telling my son that it is OK to beat up the next door neighbour's kid just because he broke my son's toy and the action would satisfy and justify his sense of loss... OUCH! And why pick on me??? Did you read everybody else's comments? After all, this question is about 5 year olds! I have had 5 year olds in my household and I'll be darned if I let them make any kind of decision, even for a chocolate bar! At 5 years of age, all you can hope for is having good, sensible and caring parents - the rest becomes easy for them, no matter what their differences are in comparison to this society's "norms". | Would you let your son wear a dress to his first day of kindergarten?
That's exactly what I said in my earlier comment; if he really chooses to wear skirts and dresses at an age where he understand the implications of his actions, then - let it be. | Would you let your son wear a dress to his first day of kindergarten?
