41I don't know how serious anyone here is being about the racial situation in New England, but don't get the idea we're the New Confederacy or anything. It's true that the black population north of Massachusetts is relatively small, but in my 32 years of living in New England (CT, MA, and NH) I've never lived on a street that didn't have at least one black family living on it. There are a lot of black people in Connecticut and Mass, probably in Rhode Island too though I'm no expert on that state. After that it's probably NH, VT, and ME in that order. I'm not aware of any more racial tension in New England than anywhere else. I'm prepared to be corrected on that point but I don't think I'm far off. Nobody "keeps them in their own towns." You'll see a higher concentration in urban areas, but that's true of everywhere in the US. I think those other guys were kidding, but I didn't want you to get a false impression of New England as some kind of bastion of racism.

And who knows, maybe those guys were being serious. I wouldn't mind debating that topic. * smile *

42Homogenous, yes. But that doesn't necessarily imply widespread racism. There aren't many blacks in Finland either I'll bet, but it's not because they keep them out. That's the only point I was trying to make. How was that one black person treated in general? Are you planning to attend the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah?
43That all sounds about right to me.Are you planning to attend the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah?
44I don't think that at all. I think we just have a bit of crossed communication. A quick recap might help clarify. It was suggested (I think jokingly) that New England is kind of racist. I attempted to counter that impression, saying that it's no more racist than anywhere else, and that the population patterns are not unusual. Then you pointed out (correctly) that Maine is very white. In the context of the thread to that point, I took that to be intended as a counter-example. I didn't think that you were equating anything with anything, just offering a "yeah but" example so as to churn up the conversation a bit (a perfectly reasonable thing to do). If I misinterpreted I apologize. Are you planning to attend the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah?
45What are you basing that on? I don't see that at all. Certainly those effects are present as they are everywhere in the US, but "considerably more present"? I'd like to see some figures on that. Are you planning to attend the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah?
46Okay, but that's one city (where I lived for a year so I do know what you're talking about and you're right). I did see a lot of racism in Boston. And it wouldn't surprise me to see the same thing in Providence and Hartford. But what I'm saying is that I'd also expect to see that and worse in NYC or Memphis or Las Vegas or Austin or Des Moines. It's an urban America thing, not a New England thing. Is there a US city that is "very highly racially integrated"? For all the negative rap NE is getting, I have yet to see anyone use the phrase "unlike [fill in the blank with some other part of the US], where white and black people live together in relative harmony."Are you planning to attend the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah?
47That's cool about Columbus. It sounds a lot like Manchester NH in that regard. (Hey, I gotta keep stickin' up for NE!) * smile * But I'm serious that Manchester (and NH in general) is a lot like that too. I'm often surprised by how many interracial couples I see up here. The neighbors on either side of us are interracial (as are we, now that I think of it!).Are you planning to attend the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah?
48One thing has always struck me as odd, and I think it's a pretty widespread phenomenon, not just NE. Whenever I see a straight interracial couple (black/white specifically), it's almost always a black man and a white woman. I don't think I've seen more than one couple of the opposite combination in my life. I wonder why that is? Do white guys tend not to find black women attractive? I am generally not attracted to black women (but give me Halle Berry any day) so maybe there's some validity to that theory, but I'm just one guy so who knows? Are you planning to attend the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah?
49Have you ever talked to him about the phenomenon? (I'm using "phenomenon" because I can't think of a better word; I don't mean to dehumanize anyone.) I'd be intrigued to discuss interracial relationships with someone in that position.

I can't tell if you're disagreeing with my assessment or just interjecting a personal example? I definitely didn't mean to suggest that you never see white men with black women, it just seems from my own observations that it's very rare relative to the opposite combination. For every Roger Ebert or Robert DeNiro I see, I see a lot more Dennis Rodmans, OJs, Clarence Thomases, Michael Jacksons... okay, maybe Michael Jackson was a bad example. * wink *

50It appears that race relations in Columbus may not necessarily be the perfect picture of racial unity, but they still have a lot of good people there. One gentleman in this article has mixed feelings about Columbus but seems relatively positive about it. This United Way study suggests an intriguing split between blacks and whites in central Ohio regarding the current state of race relations.

Sorry if it looks like I'm picking on Columbus (you brought it up! * smile * ). I'm sure it's a lovely city and I tried to provide a fair range of sources. I just wanted to illustrate that the jury is never fully in on these kinds of topics. Feel free to research my beloved New Hampshire if you like...I'm sure we've got our share of detractors. * smile *
