Your words would carry more weight if you gave examples, perhaps of specific people you know whose ``homophobia'' was actually based in visceral fear. I am very sceptical of the idea that people opposed to homosexuality are simply expressing fear of it, because it seems like it's too convenient, a tailor-made cop-out answer to be used to dismiss any disapproval of homosexuality. This idea, with its obvious implication that the fear is unwarranted, makes it very easy to ridicule anyone who opposes homosexuality as a coward. This is especially so for suggestions that people are afraid ``whether they realize it or not,'' which allow one to ignore the arguments even of people who claim to have examined their feelings and found no fear. When an idea is that convenient to one's cause, it is naturally tempting to believe it even in the absence of good evidence for it. I recommend extreme caution in such cases.
