The distinction between "hitting" and "spanking" is not one that I believe would be understood by most children, and they will likely emulate the violent behaviour and apply it inappropriately. Emotional abuse is equally prone to teaching inappropriate behaviour, so methods which minimize both while communicating the desired behaviour(s) are preferable.
