| 2 | We should refrain from using the word in the presence of anyone who *is* mentally handicapped (downs syndrome or other such disabilities) if they have stated or we know that it offends them. We should refrain from calling people retarded to their face, or calling them a 'retard' in a mean manner. The word in itself, when used in proper context, does not offend people unless they think they are "standing up" for other people, (who generally don't care one way or the other).
Case in point: On Youtube, there is a set of videos called "The retarded policeman". A guy with downs syndrome makes the videos. In one video, he speaks to the camera, talking about how he wants to take the word back. I believe people tend to get offended for others who can think and speak for themselves, even if it's been assumed that they can't.  | How do you feel about banning the word "retard"? |
