I successfully quit alcohol, and nicotine. Alcohol almost destroyed me, so I had to quit and in any case I can no longer tolerate even small amounts. I just lost the taste for cigarettes soon after quitting the booze: it started robbing me of sleep, due a feeling of constriction in the chest area.Have you ever quit using/doing something you were addicted to? If so what aids did you use and how did you do it?
It depends. If it's in a wide open space then no, but in an enclosed space like a bus or train, very much so, because you don't know what they're capable of, even if they are at first sight unthreatening. If a stranger is acting loony, but not threatening, do you find it disturbing?
I tend to avoid it, it stresses me our like no one's business, on the other hand with close friends and family, I can be a real raconteur. If forced, I'll engage in it, but it's really not my thing at all.How do you feel about making small talk with people?
I've read "Metamorphosis" by Kafka in English, and others of his work, and Camus' "L'Etranger" in the original French, almost certainly several times...I love it. But the others I've never read. What of the following books have you read?
I'd watch it if it came on TV out of curiosity, but I wouldn't go and see it in the cinema: it's a sad situation. MJ was supposed to be playing here in my city of London until next spring. Are you going to the limited engagement Michael Jackson movie?
I would probably have a restless night, and then go into a deep sleep in the small hours, and then struggle to get up after having repeatedly hit the snooze button. Once up though, I'd be fine after a short while of wandering around like a zombie.Imagine that you have to wake up early e,g 4.00am, which of the following type of person are you?
I'd probably e-mail the teacher, and explain that the kid was in the right and what was he or she thinking by making such a flagrant error; although I'd also ensure that my kid know that telling adults they're lying is rude and wrong. How would you react if you received the following note from your kid's teacher?
My talent would be singing.

PS. I've auditioned for several talent shows including the X Factor! Only once did I come close to any kind of success, when I reached the finals of a singing comp. at a local night club...I was handed the chorus to the Monkees' "Daydream Believer" and decided to improvise around it rather than sing the melody straight, to a chorus of boos from the audience. One of the comperes then turned to me and said: "You blew it, Carl". He seemed genuinely upset when he said it, as if he knew I should have won.

Thank you for the encouragement. Jim would be flattered to hear that; Grapelli was a master. You're right: Pop culture is not the right arena for our kind of music. Many ask me why we're not playing live; but it was conceived as a recording project. The '20s theme angle is an excellent one: there is plenty of nostalgia for that era today in many big cities. I love your hyper-imaginative descriptions of a possible costume for me; you write amazingly well! And the clothes described sound fabulous...and I'd love to wear them, although as you say it'd have to be the right venue. In some of the places near me, I'd not go down too well in such admittedly splendid attire! Thanks for your reply, Krystal...both encouraging and highly entertaining...thanks!If you were going to audition for a talent show, what would your talent be?
I know what you're saying: free distribution has its drawbacks. And you're right: swing-style music has a limited audience. I'm not familiar with Planxty (I'll have a listen at youtube), but have always loved Al Stewart, at least the albums I've heard: I remember "Love Chronicles" as a kid; caused a bit of a stir with what was still quite graphic language for the day... My favourite is probably "Time Passages". I had a listen to your music today: it's different from mine to say the least, but I enjoyed it. It defies comparison (which is good: so much avant garde music today is derivative) but some of it put me in mind of Stockhausen, and some at times, also Beefheart; Syd Barrett. And of course, Fripp who you mention. But ultimately it's pretty unique, with elements of Blues, Jazz, experimental. I got quite spaced out once or twice which I didn't expect. Thanks again for your encouragement re. my songs: I think playing live has got to be the way forward! If you were going to audition for a talent show, what would your talent be?
