Now it looks like we won't be able to keep our jobs unless we go to NJ. I don't know why they'd get our hopes up and then not give us any more information. I'm getting all my information from a co-worker in another department... we have a very small office, only 15 permanent employees including our warehouse guys. My cousin moved to NJ about 4 years ago... it's far enough away that we don't see her but once a year, usually summer. To New Orleanians, anyplace that takes longer than 2 hours to get to is cross-country.
My grandmother is feeling better although she sounded terrible today. She coughing a lot so she's getting a lot of the fluid out of her lungs. Her oxygen levels aren't where they should be but it's all due to the amount of coughing she's been doing. She thinks they'll discharge her tomorrow so we can maybe get her to my mom's house if she gets power by Friday. Until then, Houston is still our "home" as it's been since the Saturday before the storm.
I'm glad Caleb had a good time with school, I'm sure he'll have fun with soccer as well. Kids can be so much stronger than adults at times like these, even if it is because they don't fully realize what has happened. Just hang in there and keep smiling for him | wolfchik9

My company is leaasing warehouse space in NEW JERSEY, the other side of the world as far as I'm concerned. Supposedly we're going to be able to work from home using a remote desktop but I'm still not sure if that's going to work. They do not think we got water inside our building so the contents of our warehouse should be resellable. So now they might need some of us to stay closer to N.O. in case we can go back to our building. I'm so tired of these back-and-forth emails because nothing definite is coming out of them. I just want to know if I should move on or hold on.
Good luck with everything! My aunt is relocating to Jacksonville, Florida once Ophelia is out of the picture. The rest of my family is unclear. My grandmother was rushed to the hospital here in Houston the other night with the beginnings of congestive heart failure so until she can be discharged and settled down, we can't do anything. One hit after another, can we rebuild, do we level the city, what more can we take? |

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers! For now, my whole family (help me!) is staying in the same hotel in Houston. My aunt is trying to get her company to relocate her, probably to Jacksonville, Florida. The rest of us are completely unsure of our plans. My parents' house is fine, no power or water, but it is structurally sound. We might go there once power is restored. For now, I have no permanent address. But feel free to email me at any time. As I was typing this, I finally heard from one of the supervisors from my work... as of right now, everyone is slowly being accounted for... some were rescued and some fled as far as Honduras (she had been planning on going back home, this was as good a chance as any). I must run but I send my love to all my SC friends! | wolfchik9

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts and prayers. Sorry I haven't been on here in a long time, we've had a lot going on in the past few years. I haven't the time to check my email half the time. Thank you for remembering me and your concern.
My entire family was able to survive the hurricane. My aunt and her children, my grandmother and uncle, and many of my friends have lost their homes, all of their belongings, pictures, clothes. As far as I can see, that area will be unfit for living for many months. We're scared to go back to our apartment in Metairie because we have heard that buildings and homes in Metairie (right outside the border between Metairie & New Orleans) have already been looted and trashed. We're being advised to be ready to protect ourselves when we enter our homes if we go back to get whatever we have left. We're currently looking into renting an apartment or house monthly in the Houston area, not sure whether my aunt can be transferred to a Texas office, but we need someplace to live and try to maintain some semblance of normalcy for the months ahead. It is expected to take months to get the water out, clean up the streets, and start to get the power back on in the areas outside the city. We have no income, no home, no food, and only the clothes that we packed for 2-3 days. I've gotten clothes for my family that have nothing because all of the footage showed only rooftops. I'll hopefully have clothing if my apartment hasn't been looted and the windows haven't blown and the roof is still intact. We've been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local people, businesses, and churches in the Houston area. An Olive Garden has been feeding us, the Sheraton has meals for us, hotels are giving discounts, random people and giving us money for essentials, clothes, and food we have just purchased. Some of us have nothing, but we're truly blessed to have each other and the generosity of the people willing to help. Thanks for everything you are doing to help. When you see the pictures of the rooftops, remember that those houses belong to my grandmother, my aunt, my friends, my co-workers. I'll never be able to contact everyone I have known... cell phones with 504 area codes are not able to receive calls from other 504 cell phones so we are being forced to get new cell phones in order to keep in touch with our families. Nextel seems to be the best bet since the "direct connect" walkie-talkie feature is working. If you have an old Nextel phone with that feature and know of any evacuees, they desperately need those phones to contact family and friends all over the country. Since Monday, we have been unable to call the phone of the person in the same room as us, we can't access voicemail to see if a loved one has called with their location. We're all over the country and it will take a long time before everyone is accounted for.
Sorry to ramble but I just want everyone to know that most of us are completely displaced, jobless, homeless. This is a major catastrophic event that will continue to affect everyone in the country. 9/11 was bad but it was centralized in one area. This storm killed people in 4 states, the death toll will exceed that disaster by far. I do not want to downplay the gross devastation that the country felt for those families that lost loved ones, but entire families were killed as they slept through the storm unable to get through their attics to the roof, unable to swim to safety, unable to get their children out of harm's way in Louisiana. The water rose so fast, the waves overtook homes in Mississippi. Alabama never knew what was really happening before the water engulfed their streets and homes. Florida thought they were for once out of the track. We never thought it could be this bad. They always said it could happen but it sounded like a bad dream. We never thought it was ever really going to come true.
My love to the entire Gulf Coast and the SC community. We must stick together and keep our heads up. |

Kat and I have been waiting for more info on the camera down south. I thought I was supposed to get it and pass it to her but I don't know who was supposed to be sending it to me... it has changed so many times. Who is sending it to me? |

Thank you. I did get your card but I've been sick for a week and a half... I started with a sore throat and sinus drip and it led to laryngitis. So I lost my voice for my birthday. Lucky me! I have had NO time to try to relax to get better because my company is having their spring conference where our customers and other vendors like us all get together and talk shop... and visit our office and create chaos. So, I appreciate the well wishes, I haven't had the time yet to use those wishes for good. However, we did have to Spring Forward and lose an hour of my birthday... it wouldn't have done me much good anyway. Talk to you soon!!!!! |

I have no clue where most of you all live so however it would be easiest to get it to Louisiana is good for me. I'm patient... seeing as this has been going on for over a year now. I'm trying to keep up, I've got to catch up on surveys and keep up with the forum too. If anything new has happened to anyone in the past year I'd love to hear about it! | wolfchik9

Hey, guys! Sorry I've been gone for so long but my job has been draining me since I became permanent. I missed you guys! I can't imagine what has happened since the last time I was here regularly. I have only kept up with maybe one or two people since summer. I hope everyone is doing well. I saw the cameras are STILL going strong. Am I still in? Take care and hope to see you all often! |
