You're an experienced mental health professional, or at least you say you are. Contemplate my inner mind - someone who has been diagnosed as bipolar, has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Dissociative Disorder. I also test very high for Borderline Personality Disorder and Schizotypal Disorder. And a couple other things I won't mention here. It takes a bit of work to go through every day appearing to be 'normal' and a happy, pleasant person. Closest to suicide was 21 years ago. Recent years it would more likely be the "suicide" of another person. Currently feel nothing good or bad about most anyone. They are just 'there'. My cats however are my kids and it pains me deeply when they are sick or one dies. People dieing means nothing to me. You're a specialist in dealing with alcohol and such. 15 years ago I got a bottle of Jack Daniels for Christmas. I generally my whole life never drank. I liked the buzz from that bottle of Jack and my obsessive compulsive side kicked in and I started drinking every night. Within a month I was up to pretty much a whole bottle of whiskey a night and I wasn't even buzzed by it. The only thing it was tearing up my stomach. After 6 months of that I just decided it was crazy and stopped totally cold turkey. Rarely drink anything these days. But, I still can knock down a large amount without getting drunk. Hah, my usual drink was taking a 12 ounce glass, adding a little ice, 8 ounces of whiskey and about 4 ounces of 7-UP. That was like drinking 5 drinks at once. I'd put down 3--4 of these easy a night. Still could but no desire. That's the way it is with me. If I start something it "sticks" and I 'have' to do it as a ritual. I go from eating Twinkies every night for a month, to candy bars, to pretzels, you name it. None good for me either since I'm diabetic now. Cigarettes are one thing that I never quit and don't want to. Actually I've never seen Dexter because we don't get that channel.
